Enter between majestic kauri columns to explore four floors of exhibitions, many centuries of art and one of Auckland's most iconic buildings
Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki holds one of the country's largest and most renowned collections of both local and international art. It is New Zealand’s largest and most inspiring visual arts experience.
Housed in one of Auckland's oldest civic buildings, the gallery first opened in 1880s and since then has been refurbished, redesigned, and adapted to give visitors better access to the more than 17,000 pieces in the gallery's collection.
The gallery is open every day except Christmas Day. Admission charges apply for international visitors, while Gallery entry is free to New Zealand residents, Gallery Members, and children aged 12 and under. Some special exhibitions may require a paid ticket.
To learn more about the works on the show take one of the gallery's guided tours which run twice a day and take roughly an hour. During the tour, volunteer guides will tell you more about the history of not only the art, but also the artists that created it.
After the tour, visit the Creative Learning Centre which is a family favorite with its interactive installations designed especially to help kids discover how engaging art can be.
Alternatively, simply relax in the gallery's café, which serves an a la carte menu as well as other hot and cold meals, salads, cakes, and pastries.
The gallery's gift shop stocks posters, prints, and postcards of some of the collection as well as ceramics and homewares by leading New Zealand artists making it the perfect place to buy a unique souvenir.
